Larvikite is a variety of monzonite, notable for the presence of handsome, thumbnail-sized crystals of feldspar. These feldspars are known as ternary because they contain significant components of all three end-member feldspars.  The feldspar is partly unmixed on the micro-scale to form a perthite, and the presence of the alternating alkali feldspar and plagioclase layers give its characteristic silver blue sheen (Schiller effect) on polished surfaces.

This lesson is given so you can understand and appreciate the beautiful iridescence present in the stone, Larvikite (also known as Norwegian Moonstone).  It can only be found in Norway;  its name originates from the town of Larvik in Norway.

Four Larvikite 34mm round coins are featured as the basis for this necklace.  There is an 18mm squashed round striped bead dropping from a sterling silver carved out bail ring in the center with Thai Karen Hill Tribe Free Form Sticks followed by 5mm Larvikite beads.  More roundel beads and stick beads separate the next two Larvikite beads.  A slight change in pattern occurs with more roundels and stick beads but connecting to 20mm marquis shaped Larvikite. Following this sequence is a grouping of 5mm angle cut Black Onyx, with 5mm sterling silver round beads intermittently placed.  The clasp is a 21mm gunmetal-plated brass swivel 'S' hook clasp. The matching earrings contain the marquis shaped Larvikite bead with a turban wound bead atop and spacer beads at both ends then dropping from ball end, wired sterling silver ear wires.

The necklace measures 24" in length including the clasp.  Add an additional 1 3/8" for the drop and bail.  The earrings drop 1 1/8" from the ear wires.

In designing this necklace, I capitalized on the silvery iridescence of the Larvikite stone by using sterling silver in the form of stick beads (one of my favorites!) as well as the roundel and round beads.  I liked the appearance of these enhancements being set between the Larvikite for a stunning, chic look.
